Temple Hill Math Day

Picture
~For Math Day, the MSMC Math Club members, under the advisement of Dr. Fothergill, created stations for the students of Temple Hill Academy in Newburgh, NY. Each station consisted of a Math Activity for students to participate in with questions to solve. My station was a probability activity at the Kindergarten level.

We found the probability of flipping a certain color on a two-sided disc - when the trials are repeated, the chances of getting each of the colors gets closer and closer to 50/50. Each Kindergarten student had a chance to flip, and a tally was taken to show the number of flips per color. In addition, there was a Spanish-speaking class that came and I used my basic Spanish knowledge to communicate the math ideas behind this activity.

To Russia With Skype
Spring 2011

Picture
The above picture is a snapshot of an article from Spring 2011 in which a few select students were given the opportunity to Skype with a classroom in Russia. I believe that it takes tolerance and an appreciation of other cultures to be a successful teacher, and it was rewarding to have this rare chance to interact with them on the MSMC campus.

Literacy Alive
April 12, 2013

Picture
~Literacy Alive is an annual event held by Kappa Delta Pi, with stations run by members. This year it was held in Berea Elementary with the theme "Countries Around the World". I chose to represent Japan with the book "The Boy of the Three-Year Nap" by Diane Snyder. My activity was "Change the Story" (an activity that resembled Mad-Libs).

After a brief introduction to Japanese culture and a synopsis of the book, we used various nouns, adjectives, verbs, and other parts of speech to re-write the story in a funny way. I then read the "new story" to the students.
